Can't get life insurance for my daughter?
My daughter is 11 months old with a few birth defects that will be corrected with 3 more surgeries. Me and my husband have tried to get life insurance in case something goes wrong. But we haven't found anywhere that will let us have insurance on her because of her upcoming surgeries. They all say that we can get it after her surgeries are over, which kinda defeats the purpose. We've tried everywhere in town and applied for the Gerber insurance but with no luck. Is there something we can do? Is there some place that will let us get insurance on her? Is it even legal for these companies to turn down someone when they need life insurance the most?

- Yep, the time to get it, is before stuff goes wrong. Unless of course, money is no object. So, if you want a $5,000 policy, and you're willing to pay $2500 for it, a high risk life insurance broker might help (the insurance company will calculate the odds, and price the coverage accordingly.) Don't forget, life insurance is a bet, on whether or not the insured person will die, and how soon. The premium vs payout are the odds, and the odds will ALWAYS favor the insurance company.
- Unfortunately it is perfectly legal. This is the biggest problem with having privatized insurance. They turn her down because they feel like they will have to pay if something happens to her. Insurance companies control the vast majority of America's wealth because the way they work is they want you to pay them a substantial more amount then they will have to pay you if something happens. Continue to look around on the internet for life insurance brokers and maybe you can find one that will help, if not I suggest trying to find a health insurance plan with a critical illness writer policy on it.
- When you buy life insurance the company is betting on you living a long time so that they can invest your premiums to make up for the face value when you die. The older you get or the sicker you are makes it difficult to afford a policy. If you want to get a policy you can but you will have to pay big money for it.
- Insurance companies are businesses. No insurance company (except possibly a high risk insurer charging exorbitant rates) is going to insure anyone that has upcoming surgery, because every surgery involves risk. It is legal for them to deny coverage because of that, and they have to in order to keep life insurance rates affordable for everyone. If you had your own life insurance with a children's term rider then your child would have coverage under that. For the few dollars a month I highly recommend all parents and soon-to-bes add that rider. My son is asthmatic and my husband diabetic, so I know about crazy expensive and impossible-to-get insurance. At this point you are best off saving your money, and praying for a great outcome for your daughter. As will I. Best of luck as you muddle through these next stressful surgeries!
