  1. There are many good companies. But you need to also find a good agent that will help you figure out what kind of policy you need and how much. My suggestion is to take a cheap term life insurance policy with level premiums for 20 or30 years. You get the most insurance for your dollar. It is the best deal in town. Other policies such as whole life or universal life are a LOT more expensive and just remember, insurance agents love to sell it because they make a lot more commission on it. It's better for them, but probly not for you.
  2. All I can say is get term insurance. Stay away from whole life, universal life, or cash value policies. They are way more expensive (like $100 to $150 more per month). The cash value of the policy does not build up fast enough to justify the extra expense because they charge so many fees. Plus, if you die, the beneficiary gets only the death benefit, and the insurance company keeps YOUR cash value portion. Its a rip off party and you become the guest of honor. One of the biggest myths used to sell rip off cash value plans is the fact that term life insurance expires after the stated term, leaving you with no insurance. This is used to scare you, but don't be scared. You don't need life insurance forever. Get 20-30 year term insurance. Think about where you'll be in 20-30 years. Your kids will be grown up and out on their own, and you'll have built up a nice nest egg for retirement, so if you die, your spouse will have enough money that they don't need your income to survive, therefore they don't need life insurance to replace your income. Think of it this way. Life insurance serves one purpose. Its purpose is to remove the finacial burden your family would feel if they lost your income. Life insurance isn't meant to be a place to invest and save money. Its ONLY supposed to remove the one aspect of your death that can be solved with money. It can't remove the emotional loss, or give your child a parent, but it can remove the financial burden from the other parent (or adopted parent) would have if they had to raise the kids and live without your income.
