Which Gerber insurance?

My son is 6 months old & I wanted to get him under Gerber life insurance.. I can't choose between term or whole... I originally applied for whole but my grandmother told me to go with term...any suggestions? Thanks. For my son, 6 months old....I wanted to make sure I would be able to provide him with money for college, or for a funeral if that situation was to arise. I would also like to be able to take money out if there was a financial emergency. I have very slow internet so it's difficult for me to search for insurance online... any suggestions?

  1. Neither. Unless you have a family history of childhood deaths and would be unable to afford a funeral, buying life insurance for a child is a waste of money.
  2. They're both a ripoff - kids rarely die. What's the GOAL of the insurance? To pay for his funeral? or to pay college expenses? if it's to pay for his funeral, get term insurance. if it's to pay for his college, open a 529 plan and contribute to that instead.
  3. First, make sure you have enough insurance on YOU - both life and disability. This is far more important than starting a life insurance plan for an infant. Second, there are better child plans for children than the Gerber plan. Shop around.
  4. You may want to choose the whole life plan which builds cash value for the future for your son. However, before buying the Gerber Life Plan for your son, review the AM Best financial ratings. Source: BusinessWire.com (5/4/09) A.M. Best Co. has revised the outlook to negative from stable and affirmed the financial strength rating (FSR) of A (Excellent) and issuer credit rating (ICR) of “a” of Gerber Life Insurance Company (Gerber Life) (White Plains, NY). You may want to consider the Globe Young Adult Plan to compare the plans benefits, pricing, and the AM Best Financial Ratings with the Gerber Life plan. Best of luck to you and your son.
