All Life Insurance Tips

Turning 18 next month and extremely motivated in regards to getting out of my parents house *tips and info plz?

I turn 18 in August and will be starting community college in the same month as a freshmen. I have lived with my parents for my whole life and have always been provided for and am grateful for it, yet I always feel controlled and supressed because "they know whats best for me". Long story short, I'm indebted to my parents for raising me well but I feel like it is my time to go. Like I said, I will just legally become an adult in august. So the problem I have is getting my butt on track in able to pay for everything. I've just started my second job two weeks ago and work as a cashier making 7.50 starting out hoping I can get paid more with hard work. My first job I work in a restaurant/cafe setting making 7.75. I also go to college full time The rooms around me are going for 400-600 with utilites included and I can eat balanced and healthy at my jobs for 2-4 dollars a meal. otherwise im eating the staples at home. I'm used to working hard and doing what needs to be done in order to get things out of the way. Hell, If need be I'll sleep in my car or anywhere else I can find and take showers in bathrooms: thats how badly I want to move out. btw insurance for me is around 200 and gas would be 40-50 a week for the used lexus mid sized suv that I worked for myself by washing cars and mowing lawns in the neighborhood at 16.

  1. All I can say is, you're going to struggle financially. Yes it'd be awesome to be completely free of your parents (I completely understand), but the truth is, you're going to need their support, financially mainly. But perhaps emotionally as well.
  2. Unless u are going to live in a dorm, stay at home trust me. The costs of living alone surpass the need to feel "liberated" from your parents. The real world sucks, and if I could redo it, I would have never left, they would have had to pry me out their house if I was still living there and in college. You need to give your full attention to college, its not high school, and its not free. So hang on for a little while or move into a dorm.
  3. put your nose to the grind and just deal with your parents. they love you and don't want you to go. its a win-win if you stay. 1. they legally cant stop you or tell you to do anything, as you are an adult. 2. free food. 3. no rent, no utilities, unless you have the asshole parents that make you pay rent. (my buddy paid rent from 15 years old until the day he moved out). 4. you can SAVE your money longer. 5. somebody will always be nearby to help you through.
  4. I congratulate you on your initiative and desire to be self sufficient. What you describe is simply a matter of income needing to exceed expenses, and I can already tell you're intuitively looking at it like that. IF you're working 60 hours a week - real, real, tough to do while going to school full time, I'll guess you'll be clearing around $1500 month ($7.70/hr x 60 hrs x 4 wks/mo - 20% for taxes). That's the income. On the expense side - $500 for rent, $10/day for food ($300/mo), $200 for insurance, $200 for gas is $1200. So yes, it can be done. Of course, this assumes nothing for entertainment, dates, an occasional nice meal out, clothes, splurges, or any of that. It also assumes no tuitition, no car payment or car repairs while working 60 hrs/week at two jobs and attending school full time. All big assumptions, at least some of which probably aren't accurate. It'll be a tough road, but stay dedicated, you can manage. Good luck!
