What happens if I fail a life insurance drug test?

My husband and I went to go get him a life insurance policy today and they had previously asked us if he smoked cigarettes. So we admitted to him smoking cigarettes and understood that we would have to take the higher payments and rates. Then, next thing I know, after my agent gives my husband the oral saliva test to check for nicotine, I ask, "So if we admitted to him smoking, why do we need to take this test?" Finally, he admits that it is a drug test. We had just smoked a joint the night previous. Anyway, the whole point is, if they come back with a positive for marijuana on him (which I'm sure they will) where do we go from here? Will we also lose our car insurance? Should I just switch to another company? I could really use some guidance here, I'm freaking out. My drug use does not affect my life. I work full time, pay my bills, and have my priorities in order. I would like a serious answer. I am not here to be judged, nor do I judge others. Thanks

  1. Most likely they will either jack up your rates or not insure you. Likely same for the car, as you are more likely to get in an accident when driving while impaired. I used to smoke my fair share of weed, but I stopped, b/c I failed a drug test that cost me a job. As you can see, as much as you think it doesn't affect your life, it clearly can.
  2. Yes, you will lose your insurance. No one wants to cover a druggie. Would you insure someone who uses illegal drugs?!?!?! Grow up and quit breaking the law. And if it does not affect your life, why are you stressing out over this? Your post states that you are "freaking out".
  3. You get denied life insurance. You can talk to your agent about where to go from there. You won't lose your car insurance, but the denial will show up in your records, the NEXT time you apply for life insurance. And, yes, your drug use DOES affect your life - you just haven't noticed it yet. But you're starting to, with this life insurance rejection.
  4. You'll be denied life insurance and the Medical Information Bureau will be marked that you were denied for drug use so you don't try to lie to another company as well. It's common knowledge that they test for drugs (including nicotine), sugar in your blood, cholesterol, etc...
  5. Two possible outcomes: 1) Both of you will be denied coverage. 2) Both of you will be rated higher than tobacco users. The decision will be up to the underwriting department of the insurance company. If you do get your life insurance policy, it is very important that you read it immediately. The facts in the policy may be different from what your agent said.
