Whats wrong with being a liberal?

Think about it: Whats wrong with being a liberal.. Christ wasn't a conservative. He fed the hungry simply because they were hungry. He didn't require that they go to work first. He healed the sick, simply because they were sick. He didn't push them into an insurance company, or let the drug companies gouge them on prices. Jesus was a liberal; Herod was the conservative. Moses was the liberal; Pharaoh was the conservative. Abolitionists were liberals; slave owners were the conservatives. Mandela is a liberal; the South African apartheid leaders were the conservatives. That's why conservative Dick Cheney supported apartheid over Mandela, and approved of keeping Mandela in prison. The Suffragettes were liberals; those who opposed the vote for women were conservatives. Martin Luther King was a liberal; the segregationists were conservatives. He wanted to end racial discrimination; they wanted to conserve it. Advocates of national health care are liberals; George W. Bush, the HMOs and drug companies are the conservatives. They profit from the current system and want to conserve it from reforms that would make health care affordable for all Americans. America was a liberal idea. Washington and Jefferson were the liberals; King George was the conservative. America was founded on the proposition that ''We the people'' were endowed with inalienable rights -- including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And when oppressed by an unjust ruler, we had the right to declare our independence and establish our own form of government. And America was built by liberals -- by dissenters, by those persecuted for their religion or their race. The Statute of Liberty doesn't say, ''Send me your privileged, your wealthy, your powerful yearning to conserve their fortunes.'' It says, ''Send me your tired, your poor, your humble yearning to breathe free.'' Today the choices are equally clear. Bush and Cheney argue for tax cuts for the wealthy; they want to consolidate the wealth and power of the ''have mores'' that the president calls ''my base.'' Liberals are for rolling back tax cuts for the rich and investing in education so every child gets a fair shot. Conservatives would conserve the two Americas: one system of education, health care and retirement security for the powerful, and one for the rest of us. Liberals would make certain that everyone has the right to a high-quality education, to affordable health care, to a decent retirement. Bush wants to cut guaranteed benefits under Social Security while privatizing it; liberals want to save Social Security so that all Americans have a basic floor beneath their feet. Bush is against a minimum wage; liberals want to raise the minimum wage. Bush wants to weaken the 40-hour week and reduce those eligible for overtime; liberals want to make certain workers get paid overtime if they have to work more than 40 hours a week. You can pick your side -- liberal or conservative, for change or for the status quo, for the poor or for the privileged. For me, I stand with Christ against Herod; Moses against the Pharaoh; the abolitionists against the slaveholders; King against the segregationists, the Suffragettes against the male politicians; the many against the few, and liberals against this crowd in the White House. But whatever you choose, the next time Bush and Cheney rail about Kerry being too liberal, remember that America was a liberal idea from the start.

Public Comments

  1. you have a point BUT liberalism has its drawbacks or else we'd be living in a Utopian society, anyways i think being a Constitutional Republican is best for the USA
  2. True. An is even better to be progressive
  3. What's wrong: Simply put everyone cannot be a liberal. Someone gotta do some useful work.
  4. There's nothing wrong with being compassionate, caring about your fellow Americans and wanting our government to spend taxpayer money on Americans, not pointless wars.
  5. Comparing a liberal to Jesus is pretty stupid because he helped others voluntarily, not using the tip of a Roman spear to force people to.
  6. No one said you could not be a liberal. It is a free country. You can choose stupid.
  7. To long to read, but it would be much easier to answer "what isn't wrong with being a liberal" because there is only one answer for that question, the answer is: Nothing.
  8. Nothing is wrong with it. Liberals and progressives are the best people.
  9. What's wrong with being a liberal? How about deliberate inconsistency in your morals, values, ethics, and politics? Blatant hypocrisy and denial! Couching your rhetoric in cant and sophistry on every issue? Being known for untrustworthyness and constantly blaming the victim of your unteneble institutions.
  10. Liberals (which is now a word that means progressives) WILL be the downfall of America.
  11. Nothing if you're referring to the true definition of liberalism. There are a multitude of flaws with the progressive "liberals" of today. Progressives always take the definition of something good and turn it around to suit their twisted agenda's.
  12. What is wrong with it? Support for: Abortion High Taxes Large Government Censorship Larger Deficit Unions Shall I continue?
  13. By your definition, any change that one qualifies as being for the "good" of society makes it "liberal." There are plenty of instances in history where society embraced a new idea when it was harmful / destructive to someone else (or a whole class of peope).
  14. So, you think that America was a Liberal idea from the start ! Let's see: At first America condoned slavery. At first America supported separation of classes At first America believed in a day's pay for a day's work etc, etc, etc There's nothing wrong with being a Liberal, but do try to be something of a realist. Don't bend history present day to suit your own ideology. Also, don't crusade to force your ideals on everyone. They're not all Liberal, and they're entitled to their own ideas and ways of life.
  15. Hitler was a liberal. Stalin was a liberal. Mao was a liberal. Lenin was a liberal. We live in a free country, so if your character drive you to associate yourself with genocide and oppression.. then I guess that's your right. But don't expect any decent Americans to support you on that stance..
  16. If you interpret the Constitution there is nothing wrong with being a liberal. Justices Hugo L. Black, William O. Douglas, William J. Brennan, and Thurgood Marshall were all liberals. But only Black tried to interpret the Constitution objectively. Douglas, Brennan and Marshall tried to interpret the Constitution SUBjectively, instilling the Constitution with their own political beliefs/predilections.
  17. You are absolutely right. It always amazes me that Conservatives go on and on about the 'founders' of our country and the 'framers' of the Constitution, yet get it so completely wrong. Jesus was the original Liberal. Conservative Christians, if they truly practice their religion, should make the best Liberals. Try to practice the Golden Rule.
  18. Whats wrong about being liberal? Everything. Don't compare Jesus to Liberals. Liberals force you to help while conservatives do it out of their own hearts.
