At what amount of coverage do life insurance companies usually require a medical exam?

I am 27 years old, in very good health. I have never had any medical conditions or issues and I am looking to buy life insurance. I know that medical exams are usually required for most life insurance policies, but I was just looking for about $150,000 worth of coverage and I was wondering if I would be required to undergo a medical exam?

  1. Depending on the company they may require only a urine test (especially is you claim to not smoke).
  2. It'll likely be blood and urine for most companies for anything $50,000-$100,000 and up. If that's an issue (due to phobia) then you can get a no exam life insurance policy. We sell them all the time. If you're perfectly healthy then you should bite the bullet and take the needle because you'll save money. But, if you're a little overweight then it'll price to be about the same as if you gave blood. We have a few clients where it worked out to be a better deal, but that's ONLY because they would have only received a "standard" rate and not a "preferred" rate.
  3. If you are in good health and can prove it, the blood test is the way to go. People who can certify they are healthy pay less than those who can't, or choose not to. You may find a policy that does not require a medical exam, but may pay more. It may come down to a personal choice - how much extra are you willing to pay to avoid giving a blood sample?
