I live in Arizona and bought a car that is in New York, how do I cover it and get it out here?
I live in Arizona. I bought a car from my brother's girlfriends father who lives in New York. The car is a 1998 Ford Explorer and is registered in New York. We agreed to the deal over the phone. I don't have car insurance. A friend of mine agreed to drive the car out this weekend. I can't register the car until it passes an Arizona emissions test. How do I make sure the car is covered by insurance as it is driven cross-country? Should I have a third party (like my brother) go to the NY DMV and register the car for me? Is it true I can't insure the car with the owner's plates and registration as my friend drives it from NY to Arizona? / / Exquis8te07: Do you mean I can still have the registration under the Seller but get a type of "transit insurance" in the meantime? /

- You should be able to get a liability coverage that will allow the vehicle to be covered like for a month and for the driver needs to be added to the temp policy for the trip.
- I do not know the motor vehicle and insurance laws in Arizona, so you should check with an auto insurance agent in your area. In some states, an insurance company will offer a "binder" for the purpose of transporting a vehicle from another state prior to registration in your home state. However, that does not solve the registration problem. The vehicle cannot be driven if it is not registered. One option is to keep the car registered and insured with the seller until it arrives in Arizona. Then, have the car emissions-tested, transfer title of the car, take out an insurance policy on the car, and register it in AZ. In some states (possibly New York) one can make a temporary transfer of registration and/or title to allow time to drive the vehicle to its final destination before registering it there (In this case you would need to purchase your own insurance). If the car is currently unregistered, you would either have to have it shipped or re-register it and insure it in New York before driving it cross-country. In either case, make sure the car's title documents are in order, otherwise you will have a problem registering it. I hope this is helpful.
