Travelling to Nevada - any advice?

I'm staying in Nevada for 11 days, travelling from UK. Never been to the US in my life! And I've never organised any trip abroad by myself. I have travel insurance, booked plane from Heathrow to Reno via San Fran, and someone to stay with. I'm going to be hawking with them and helping look after their hawks just to see what falconry in the US is lilke. What should I pack? Anyone got any tips? Anything I may have missed out in my ignorance and youth? I'm really quite stressed out about it at the moment! But once it's over and done with I'll be able to take on the whole world! I'm staying in the middle of the countryside not far from Reno. I'm told it will be cold at night, not sure how cold. What kind of clothing should I pack? What about the airport - is it big and scary? Are people there helpful? Thanks!

1. I'm in Reno, Nevada right now. Of course that's northern Nev. and we are expecting snow in the next two days. So if you're coming here, it's still mid 30's at night. Las Vegas is the exact opposite. I'm sure the weather there is starting to get warm now. So you won't need winter clothing. Any specific tips you need???? EDIT - Well if you're close to Reno then pack warm. Sweaters, gloves, winter scarfs if you'd like. Since by Saturday and Sunday a very cold winter weather front is definitely coming. The snow may not reach where you're going to be, but it will be cold for sure. It may get warm very fast too when the cold front passes. So you may want to pack for perfect weather too. It has been very nice weather prior to the cold front that will be here in two days. The aiport is very small compared to bigger cities like Las Vegas. Way smaller and the people are very nice and helpful. It's shaped like a big U. (LOL) I used to work at the airport! EDIT - And no offense to Time Traveler, but Reno does not get hot like Las Vegas. In fact since (I LIVE HERE)...LOL...I can gurantee you that the weather is perfect from April through June. Then it is 80's-90's July and August. Then in September...perfect weather again. October gets COLDER for me at least. For now.....just pack for cold and warm weather. :o)
2. Just pack all the basic necessities. Got to www.weather.com so you can see what the weather is like before you go, that away you know what to pack. You know warm or cold clothes. Ask your friend what the zip code is so you can look it up. Make a check list of what you have to bring and what you want to bring. Pack what you have to bring first. Also check the airlines to see what is not allowed. Like shampoo. Make another list of what youll need to buy when you get there that you can't bring. As long as you go by your lists and check them off as you pack, you'll be allright. I'm notorious for leaving makeup and toothbrushes.
3. Native Nevadan here. Don't gamble!!! (lol) Where in Nevada are you staying? I'm assuming Reno or Las Vegas? There's not much in the middle of the state. It should be snowing in the Reno/Tahoe area in the next two days. That cold weather will most likely last only a week or two, then spring will slowly move into Reno. I agree with Jasmina, Reno never really gets hot. It's perfect weather until sometime at the begining of July. October is never hot. It's always very nice during most of that month and doesn't get REALLY cold until the end of November.
4. Well if you are going soon, like in this next month, it will be cold in most of Nevada, expecially around Reno. It is snowing there right now. So layers are in order such as long underwear, long sleeve shirts, jackets, gloves, hat and if you have them, some warm boots. After May till October, it gets real hot there, so take that into consideration. I hope this helped you.
5. "In the middle of the countryside near Reno" you say? Well, even if you don't come until the summer, and you stay in a desert, the desert can get very very cold at night, even in August. Pack for cold weather but bring some summer items, too (you can "dress in layers', of course.) Study the weather patterns at noaa.gov, too.
