Will only having insurance on 1 car affect rates?
I have 2 cars, and have only had one of them insured. My wife is not the best driver, and so I got full coverage for her, but I don't do a whole lot of driving (maybe 2 - 10 minute drives per month) and have not had an accident in my life, so I did not get coverage for my other car (it is a beater). While I can handle normal weather driving, I am nervous about the chance of being at-fault or split-fault due to weather conditions, and wanted to get liability coverage during the winter months. Will the fact that I have not had this car insured for a few months impact my rates (~6 months)? Or will my coverage on my other car be considered as having been insured for all price purposes (I am a listed driver on that car)? Thanks! PS: If you just post a link or blatently advertise an insurance company with "great rate", I will flag you. I am asking a general question, not where to go to get a policy.

- not sure we have an old Toyata we pay only $54 a month for insurance
- If your existing policy lists you as a driver, whether or not you are the principal driver, then you can consider yourself as being continuously covered. Not having the other car insured won't matter when it comes to getting a rate quote. What the companies want to know is if YOU have been insured. For all they know - you just bought the car. Something else to ask yourself - what are your state's requirements for auto insurance? If you don't have that beater insured, and your state requires insurance on all vehicles - then you'll have problems with the law, if you get into an accident or stopped for a traffic violation. And THAT will affect your rates.
- If you have full coverage on one car that is the one with all the surcharges on it . Each other car is then set at base rate.
- Well heres the thing.....you will be covered if you both drive the car with insurance....but if either of you drive the uninsured one...you will not be covered. And in the future when you get quotes they will ask you if the car has ever been driven uninsured which it has....giving you not so good rates, if not the worst. Thing is, just get liability on the other car...it will be cheap and more then likely give you a multi-car discount which will discount both vehicles. So is it worth it to save $40 a month? I dont think so.
- I'll spare you the "you have to have insurance" speech. I'm sure you know the importance of it and it sounds like your trying to fix it. As long as you have had coverage on a vehicle, you will not be penalized for adding another that has not been insured. Also, when you get the car added make sure you tell your agent how little you actually drive the car. They should "short rate" the mileage, that will make the premium even lower.
- You can get a multi car discount if you put the other one on liability only an older driver can get that for about 150 bucks every 6 months. That also makes you legal.
