Was the whole push for gay marriage in Canada limited to a few political activist?
Data on SSM show that the marriage rate, since it was legalized in Canada is low and remains low.If there was a pent-up demand for SSM , wouldn't the stats kept going upif the demand was across the board? Was gay marriaqge more of a right to be won than a conviction the true nature of marriage? Was SSM nnothing more than a ideological symbol? Did a few gay activist marry for idological reasons, not for practical reasons like child care, life insurance, pensions and health care needs? The low stats seem to debunk their notion that SSM is about , human rights, equality, dignity. social justice and incluWhat about their other SSM spin about love. commitment to monogamous relationships. ? Are SS couple more interested in emotional monogamy than marriage. Meaning while they are having relationships with multitudes of partners, they are ony thinking of the one they truly love.Data shows when it comes to marriage. gay can do the talk but not the walk. Netherlands, stats show a similiar trend. SSM has dropped , sice it was legalized 5 years ago, from a original high of 3.02% to 1.14% per 1,000 homosexual population. - wow, you right wing neo nazis freakazoids never give up do you. Just burns you that other people are living happy, full lives outside your control.
- The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is there as much to guard the freedom of the individual as a larger group. SSM be it 10,000 or 1 marriage not the issue, it was a right under the charter that many would like to see over ruled as not of their particular brand. Nonetheless , it also guarantees the right for the far right to state its opinions openly on the charter and others rights be they one individual or one million. Anyhow, statistics can say whatever one wants them to say, be it the 10,000 or so SSM or any other statistic. And what does it matter other than to those being married anyways. Of course the decision of the Supreme Court of Ontario explains itself well, although would garner few have actually reviewed the decision by the Court when it came to SSM. The question is basically flawed as is heavily weighed in opinion and objective. Rights and freedoms do not have one iota to do with statistics and numbers. If the question related to assisted suicide would you wonder if for only ideological reasons as there was no rush to die? Now if you are worried of being considered an activitist, seems you are safe marrying your partner, very few would probably concern themselves with that on your special day. Its good you can have emotional monogamy although would talk to your same sex partner regarding the ability to physically commit, as you have put a lot of from your statements as such was not a question, you are worried of the view towards your upcoming marriage, or would certainly not post such a silly question. I love it when people do their best to twist statistics regarding others lives thinking themselves so very clever.
- I saw this question and it got me thinking about marriage in Canada. And I did some research, wondering if what you are proposing is true. And I have come across some disturbing info at the page http://www.divorcemag.com/statistics/statsCAN.shtml I don't know how accurate their info is, but here is a quote from that page: 'About 48.5% of the adult population in Canada was married in 2006 (as opposed to single, separated, divorced, widowed or living in common law). This is the first known time in Canadian history that the percentage was under half; according to CanWest News Service, the figure was 50.1% in 2001 and more than 60% during the 1980s.' It seems to me that the marriage rate in Canada has been dropping drastically over the past 20 years. And since SSM has only been legal there for the past couple of years, there seems to be a much bigger issue at work here than simply SSM. The marriage rate has been dropping due to OTHER reasons, presumably, so there is likely no way that SSM would have been able to reverse this trend. To take the issue of SSM as being limited simply for that reason is probably not accurate. Edit -- I am continuing researching this issue and came across the following site as well: http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2007/dec/07121708.html It is from a religious based site, so its results might be suspect. But they quote the following: "It turns out, however, according to recently released statistics, that pledging their love by legal marriage is not high on the agenda for homosexuals. Recently released federal figures from Statistics Canada indicate that less then 5% of homosexual Canadians have bothered to marry since same-sex marriage was legalized in 2005." If this statistic is true, then it DOES seem like there is no rush for Same-sex couples to get married. But it seems to me that the Charter of Rights in Canada REQUIRES it, and whether there is 100% or 0.001% participation, under Canadian law, the RIGHT should exist. second edit -- thanks for the stats from the Netherlands. It would have been nice if you had quoted a source for the data though, since I cannot find any rates on line that are more current than 2004. But like I said earlier, just because same-sex couples are not 'jumping at the chance' to get legally married, that doesn't mean they should NOT be allowed. But I DID find a page that said that the SSM rate in Canada is 5 times the rate of opposite sex marriage. That is DEFINITELY a relavant number FINAL edit -- Here is a link to some data from CBS on marriage rates in the Netherlands. http://statline.cbs.nl/StatWeb/table.asp?PA=37772eng&D1=0-28,35-47&D2=%28l-11%29-l&DM=SLEN&LA=en&TT=2 It seems to say that there has been pretty much identical amounts of same-sex marriages for the years 2004, 2005, and 2006. It was down a bit from the rates from the first couple years that SSM was legalized, but that is really no surprise. So I am not sure exactly where your statisitic is from.
