How long do you think maternity leave should be?
Many countries offer generous paid maternity/parental benefits for new parents, with job guarantees upon returning to work (e.g Canada - 1 year, Sweden - 16 months, France and Germany - 3 years, etc.) These countries also have a lower infant mortality rate and higher life expectancy for women. Since many countries (like Canada) have a huge surplus in the Unemployment Insurance fund, this does not necessarily represent a large burden to taxpayers. How long do you think maternity leave should be? Would you be willing to pay more in taxes (if necessary) to cover it? Do you think that maternity leave benefits society as a whole? Is it a more valuable investment in society than other things the government currently spends tax money on?

- Yes because giving mothers a chance to stay at home with babies will provide the children better and therefore hopefully a better future for them and Canada as a whole... 1 year AT LEAST
- PAID Maternity leave should be atleast 3 months, but do you know WHY america cant have that... the answer is WE WONT STOP GOIGN TO WAR! Please dont say that the war is coming to us..... please... close the boarders, spy on our enemies more and KEEP our tax dollars for the AMERICAN people. Stop shipping it all overseas , stop killing innocent women and children, stop killign our troops....... Stop all of that and we could have 3 months paid maternity leave.
- To be honest with you, I think maternity leave should definitely be longer than the standard 6 weeks given here. Unfortunately, I know what men would say to that. Men have a different way of thinking here in the US vs. Europe, or any other country for that matter. A lot of them don't care so much about the mother bonding with their babies, so in turn would not agree to a higher tax to pay for maternity leave. They feel like all women do when they are on maternity leave is sit around at home and do nothing! That is not to say your significant other thinks that way, of course not. I think reasonable maternity leave, paid, would be a at least a year. I have not had any children yet, but cringe everytime I think about how once I do I am going to have to deal with my child being raised by childcare. They are going to experience all of the wonderful things I'll be missing while I'm at work. I hate the idea of that, but will have to because we cannot afford for me to stay home. I definitely agree with you. It goes to show what's most important here in the US. Money. Not happiness, not love and family. Just money. And it is very, very sad.
